On the generality of the greedy algorithm for solving matroid base problems

چکیده
It is well known that the greedy algorithm solves matroid base problems for all linear cost functions and is, in fact, correct if and only if the underlying combinatorial structure of the problem is a matroid. Moreover, the algorithm can be applied to problems with sum, bottleneck, algebraic sum or k-sum objective functions. In this paper, we address matroid base problems with a more general – “universal” – objective function which contains the previous ones as special cases. This universal objective function is of the sum type and associates multiplicative weights with the ordered cost coefficients of the elements of matroid bases such that, by choosing appropriate weights, many different – classical and new – objectives can be modeled. We show that the greedy algorithm is applicable to a larger class of objective functions than commonly known and, as such, it solves universal matroid base problems with non-negative or non-positive weight coefficients. Based on problems with mixed weights and a single (−,+)-sign change in the universal weight vector, we give a characterization of uniform matroids. In case of multiple sign changes, we use partition matroids. For non-uniform matroids, single sign change problems can be reduced to problems in minors obtained by deletion and contraction. Finally, we discuss how special instances of universal bipartite matching and shortest L. Turner · H.W. Hamacher (B) Department of Mathematics, University of Kaiserslautern, P.O. An Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Solving the Blocking Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Total Flow Time Criteria
In this paper, we propose an iterated greedy algorithm for solving the blocking flow shop scheduling problem with total flow time minimization objective. The steps of this algorithm are designed very efficient. For generating an initial solution, we develop an efficient constructive heuristic by modifying the best known NEH algorithm. Effectiveness of the proposed iterated greedy algorithm is t...
متن کاملA Deeper Justification of Using Greedy Approach To Find A Maximal set of a Matroid
Greedy algorithms are used in solving a diverse set of problems in small computation time. However, for solving problems using greedy approach, it must be proved that the greedy strategy applies. The greedy approach relies on selection of optimal choice at a local level reducing the problem to a single sub problem, which actually leads to a globally optimal solution. Finding a maximal set from ...

متن کاملRandom Sampling and Greedy Sparsiication for Matroid Optimization Problems
Random sampling is a powerful tool for gathering information about a group by considering only a small part of it. We discuss some broadly applicable paradigms for using random sampling in combinatorial optimization, and demonstrate the eeectiveness of these paradigms for two optimization problems on matroids: nding an optimum matroid basis and packing disjoint matroid bases. Applications of th...

In this paper, as an application of fuzzy matroids, the fuzzifying greedy algorithm is proposed and an achievableexample is given. Basis axioms and circuit axioms of fuzzifying matroids, which are the semantic extension for thebasis axioms and circuit axioms of crisp matroids respectively, are presented. It is proved that a fuzzifying matroidis equivalent to a mapping which satisfies the basis ...
